On Saturday, October 10, the owners of Philadelphia’s Silica Galleries, which specializes in flameworked glass sculpture, will open a high-end flameworked glass pipe exhibition space in New York City. Located in the heart of the hip Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg, Easy Street Gallery will seek “to present pipe making in a new light, featuring a highly talented new artist each month,” according to a gallery announcement.
The Saturday evening opening will feature an exhibition curated by Silica and Easy Street co-owner Nathan Purcell of the work of Silica Gallery artist Salt, an Austin, Texas-based master of the torch whose toothy distorted creatures in flesh and terra cota colorings are a regurgitation of the partially digested experience of the chaos and disorder of modern life. As he writes in an artist statement: “I am the voice of the severely over stimulated. I choke on the baroque nature of our society; like the fish caught in the accidental netting of a discarded soda six pack. Small advertisements that have been carefully tailored to drill into my psyche and stay are fired from all directions. 3000 pieces of unwanted information a day for the average American.”
Other artists represented by Easy Street Gallery include Snic, Slinger, J.A.G., Jop, Hops, Charlene Foster, Zachary Puchowitz, Illadelph.
