Glass Masters at Work
A Film by Robin Lehman
Corning Museum of Glass
83 min, $19.95

The career-spanning love affair between Mark Matthews and glass spheres is well known, but through the lens of veteran filmmaker Robin Lehman, Matthews’ virtuosity, versatility, and ebullience receive their due. There’s a certain grace, to be sure, in watching a man execute sphere after sphere, each orb a masterclass in itself of glass technique from graal to cane to bubble entrapment. Each treatment is more complex, more dazzling, more maddening than the last. A strangely self-conscious orchestral score, peals of mad and joyous laughter, and impromptu commentary by Corning Studio resident adviser and fellow heavy hitter Bill Gudenrath provide both delight and diversion within the unapologetically circular structure of this eye-opening title from the Corning Museum.

You can buy the DVD directly from the Corning Museum here.
