Glass balcony at Chicago’s Sears Tower generates new buzz

Sears2

The Daily Mail of England reports that the owners of Chicago’s Sears Tower, the tallest building in America, have installed four glass-box viewing platforms that project four feet out from the building on the famous Skydeck level, 1,353 feet above the sidewalk. The brave can seemingly walk on air by stepping into the high-altitude glass chambers extending out from the 103rd floor.

The new attraction is reminiscent of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a U-shaped glass bridge which was unveiled in 2007 and hangs a staggering 3,600 feet over the canyon floor.

UPDATE: On July 7, The New York Times offered this in-depth account of the Sears glass balconies, and the new engineering possibilities with glass.
